Peacemaking with Compassionate Communication Class
10-Week Class on Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. in Moscow
January 30, 2008 - April 9, 2008
Unitarian Universalist Church Yellow House Basement

This 10-week class (requested donation $150) covers the 13 chapters of Nonviolent Communication, a Language of Life by Marshall Rosenberg with special emphasis on how Compassionate (Nonviolent) Communication empowers us to be peacemakers in our homes and in the world. We will cover the information in the book and have plenty of time to practice the basics. I will also be giving a series of mini-presentations (including specific exercises) on understanding the effectiveness of social change through creative nonviolent actions (ala Gandhi) and the practice of empathy for our enemies. Thus the class will provide a wealth of information, abundant time for practicing and skill building, and provide new challenges for those repeating the class.

The basic model of Compassionate Communication is simple, but life changing. The practice, particularly helped by studying with a group, illuminates our habitual, often unhelpful, patterns of thinking and communicating so that we are able to consciously choose ways of interacting that connect us deeply and compassionately with ourselves and each other. We learn to observe without evaluating, identify, express and take responsibility for our feelings and needs, and to make clear requests. We learn that the power of empathy is what makes violence not only unnecessary, but a poor strategy for getting our needs met. “...every relationship in your life -- with family or friends, co-workers, students, teachers, even with yourself -- has the potential for positive, permanent transformation” (Lucy Leu).

Compassionate Communication is not about being nice;
it is about directly and fully engaging in life.
